In 2016, Propellerhead enlisted my services to expand their factory preset library for Reason 9— placing the focus on the Combinator module. While I freely used many of the classic Reason synths (including both samplers) my go-to instrument was the iconic Thor Polysonic Synthesizer.
I’ve been a fan of Thor since it was introduced in the mid 2000s, thanks to its combination of multiple synthesis technologies including FM, phase distortion, classic analog, and even vintage PPG wavetable synthesis. The four filter types cover an equally impressive range, with comb and formant options, in addition to a state-variable multimode filter that strongly evokes the legendary Oberheim SEM. The whole experience is reminiscent of a well-designed modular synth, actually.
Now that Thor is available on iOS as as standalone app, as well as integration with the standard Reason package, it’s worth taking a closer look at its synthesis features via this Master Class.
